There’s No I In Team!
Apr 23, 2012

Do you often feel that when it comes to getting your child or children involved in household chores, you might as well be pulling teeth! Here are some great ways to ensure your child understands the value and importance of working together as a team to help maintain a happy family life.

Encourage your child to get involved in cooperative tasks. Not only will this help them learn how to work together but it will also boost their self-esteem. Acknowledge the great job they are doing whether it’s making their beds each morning or helping a younger sibling to get dressed.

Asking your child to get involved in the upkeep of the family home will nurture a good team spirit, a sense of responsibility and independence, an understanding that they are a valued member of the family and will teach valuable skills for when they reach adulthood and take responsibility for their own homes.

Involve your children in simple tasks:

  • To make their bed and open their curtains every morning
  • To brush their teeth morning and night
  • To set the table each meal time
  • To put dirty clothes in the laundry basket
  • To match up clean socks
  • To put their lunchbox in their school bag
  • To remember their reading book and homework for school
  • To tidy away their toys at the end of the day
  • To fill the dishwasher after each meal
  • To help clean the car

If you’ve more than one child, set friendly competitions to encourage them to get more done. Challenge your brood to see who can tidy their rooms the quickest. Celebrate the winner but reward them all with a fun treat when they have each completed their task!

Keep it short. Children will only be actively involved in chores for short periods of time. Don’t expect too much of them but take advantage of the ‘little and often’ rule. Ask them to take responsibility of certain tasks everyday so they learn to keep on top of things such as keeping their room tidy or completing their homework. Ensure you set realistic targets that your child can achieve!

Remember to acknowledge and reward cooperative behaviour. You can celebrate the completion of weekly chores with a Fun Friday, allowing your child to choose an activity. They could ask to watch a DVD or have a friend over to play, helping them to understand that if they do their chores, they will be rewarded!
