In this month’s newsletter, we looked at the kinds of things that can steer us off course from getting what we want. One of these was our own minds. Creating the right mindset dramatically increases your chance of success. But where do you start? By setting intentions. Here are 5 steps to help you get started.
1. Get Clear On What You Want And Why You Want It
It sounds obvious, but far too often we have a vague sense of our goals rather than a very clear picture. On top of that, we don’t always consider why it’s important to us. This can leave us in danger of chasing things we don’t really want.
For example, if you’re dreaming of moving to a bigger house this year, thinking about an extra bedroom and how that extra room would be great, isn’t going to cut it. You’ll end up becoming distracted.
Instead, get a really clear picture of that dream house and how you would style it. Really dig down into your “why” – What difference will it make to you and your family to have that extra room? How will you feel differently? Think through all the benefits and get clear.
2. Feel Into The Intention
Sometimes, thinking about it is not enough. That keeps you stuck with practicalities and logic. Your mind is far more responsive to emotions. Instead, when you’re visualising your future when you have the things you want, focus on your feelings and try and replicate them. The more you can feel what it would be like, the more your mind will stay focused on achieving it.
3. Let Go Of Attachment
It sounds impossible but you need to let go of any attachment to the outcome. If you’re desperately thinking about what you want in the future, you are, in fact, focusing attention on what you don’t have right now. This can lead to you feeling down and those negative thoughts creeping in.
Instead, many people talk about living “as if” you already had achieved your goal. That doesn’t mean spending money you haven’t got! It’s more about feeling and believing you’re already there.
4. Watch Your Language
Not everyone is a fan of affirmations, but they help you to adjust your language. If you’re thinking and talking in terms of, “I wish I could…”, “I think I can…” or “I’d like to…”, then again, you’re focusing on the difference between where you are now and where you want to be.
Setting powerful intentions requires you to know that they are your reality. Otherwise your mindset slips into thinking about what you don’t have and why – hello critical inner voice and limiting beliefs!
5. Celebrate Everything
One of the best ways to overcome a lack mindset where you’re focusing on what you don’t have is to celebrate all the small wins and everything you do have. By showing gratitude, your mindset shifts from thinking about what it believes isn’t possible to focusing on how much can be achieved.
As we said earlier, mindset is incredibly important. However, it’s not everything. That’s why our next blog will look at practical steps you can take to make sure you take action towards your goals. For now, have a think about your mindset - is it encouraging you in your dreams or is it working against you?
