If knowing your purpose and living it is key to living a happy, contented life - self-esteem plays a huge role in being able to make that happen. Self-esteem is what allows you to believe you deserve to be happy and enjoy life. When self-esteem is low, its hard to focus on what makes you happy as often the negative self-talk will drown out any positives.
Low self-esteem will have a negative impact on quality of life, affecting confidence and self-care. If low self-esteem is left unchecked, it can lead to mental health issues such as depression or anxiety.
Here are some steps can we take to overcome low self-esteem:-
What causes low self-esteem will be different for everyone. It may be triggered by a life event or series of negative events such as losing your job or being bullied.
For some people, low self-esteem is a long term condition which goes back to childhood. Whatever the reason, its worth looking at what makes you feel the way you do
Although low self-esteem will take time to build back up again it’s worth looking at what’s having that effect on you and making you unhappy. If it's a relationship or a job it may be difficult to take immediate action. If you find that going on social media has a negative effect on your mood and self-esteem you may want to reduce the amount of time spent there. Remind yourself that what people share online is only a snapshot of their life and often only the good bits.
Low-self esteem is often accompanied by negative self-talk which can become a habit that we don’t even notice. Pay attention to how you talk to yourself. If you catch yourself falling into negative talk, try to replace the negative comments with opposite ones.
A good way to get out of the habit of negative self-talk is to replace it with positives. You can celebrate your successes. Anything that makes you feel proud, no matter how small is worth celebrating.
Start accepting compliments. Rather than feeling embarrassed if someone compliments you, try accepting it with a genuine ‘Thank you’ and allow yourself to feel good about it.
Low self-esteem can make it difficult to get motivated to look after your physical and emotional needs but it is important for your mental wellbeing.
Try to get enough sleep, eat healthily and reduce stress. These are all things that will have an impact on the way you feel.
If you find your feelings overwhelming, you might feel you need support. Don’t be afraid to reach out to loved ones or look for support outside your circle. There are options for telephone support or arranging an appointment with trained professional who can help you work through these feelings.
One thing is for sure. You don’t have to deal with it on your own or suffer in silence.
