Step-By-Step Guide To Making Self-Care Happen!
Jun 25, 2018

It’s all very well understanding why we don’t prioritise our own self-care and the types of obstacles that get in our way, but it’s of no use if we don’t then do something about it!

In the last blog post, we identified the obstacles you might have. Now it’s time to take some action and begin making self-care a part of your life, regardless of your other commitments.

Realistically, how exactly can you do that? Here’s our step by step guide to making self-care happen:

Planning

Planning in time for you is absolutely key. Sometimes though, just putting it in the diary isn’t enough - life happens and it all gets thrown up in the air.

Step 1

Make a start by putting it into your calendar, if it makes you feel better add it as a business meeting with yourself. I’m willing to bet that usually you’re far less likely to cancel a business meeting than time you’ve allocated for yourself!

Step 2

When planning your diary, make sure that there is some flexibility and stretch room. If every last minute is planned out, the smallest thing can disrupt it and cause you stress.

Try to leave a couple of hours spare when scheduling your days so that when something happens that needs dealing with or something takes longer than you anticipated, you have the flexibility to deal with it without cancelling your self-care appointment.

Step 3

Finally, think about the sorts of things that tend to go wrong. We can often predict what might happen and stop us taking time for ourselves, for example the children forgetting to pick up their lunchbox as you rush out the door.

Once you identify the obstacles, you can think about contingency plans and how they can be avoided in preparation for such eventualities.

Become More Comfortable Asking For Help

Another issue we discussed in the last blog post, was not being comfortable asking for help - it’s a mindset issue but one you can tackle!

Step 1

Think about who you can ask for help and then make a list of the things you have done for them in the past or how you could possibly help them in the future. Keep it handy for when that guilt starts creeping in.

Step 2

Next, list the benefits and pleasure the person may get from helping you out. Some people love to feel useful and to help others. If it’s a family member they may feel like their strengthening their relationship with you or your children if help required involves childcare. This helps you switch from the negative thoughts of “I’m being a pain” to more positive ones!

Step 3

Sit down and have a chat with the person who could help before asking them. Start feeling them out about what they would and would not be happy to do. They’ll probably be really pleased that you’re opening up to them. This can make you feel more comfortable about asking – especially if they too have been avoiding asking for help – you may just find you can offer each other mutually beneficial support!

Step 4

Now you come to the point where you need to ask! Make sure you come to an agreement and keep communication lines open. Regularly check in with them and keep them up to date. If your child has the sniffles, let them know. This will ensure that regrets and resentment don’t start developing.

Discovering You Again

Finally, we also talked about not knowing what you would like to do anymore as motherhood can be all consuming! So, how can you start re-discovering you again?

Step 1

Start by writing a list of possible activities you would like to try. Don’t put any down that you know you would hate, feel you ‘should’ do or for which you have no interest - include everything else.

Step 2

Add to this list the things that you used to enjoy before becoming a mum. It can be anything from horse riding to listening to music! Just think about the things that used to give you a lift or bring a smile to your face.

Step 3

Next think about what you want to achieve from this quality time to yourself - do you want to relax, feel excited or have some fun? Place a star next to any of the activities that you think might provide this.

Step 4

Finally, choose something and book it! Add it to the details in your diary.

Now all you need to do, is do it! Make this happen because you deserve it. Let us know what you decided to do and how you got on!
