In my last blog I asked how focusing on your personal goals and aspirations had been going. I explained the importance of making sure goals are in alignment with your core values to ensure greater success.
No matter what they are, incorporating small changes into your day to day life can be a challenge. Not least because we are creatures of habit and habits can be difficult to break. Rather than trying to change or incorporate everything at once, the best way to make effective long lasting changes is to begin to introduce small changes one by one.
Let’s use an example of a change that most of us tend to struggle with: exercise. We make the decision that we want to get healthy, to feel and look better and even have more energy. We know that exercise is one of the best ways to get the results we want which, are own line with our core value of health/vitality. We know that without good health we will struggle to achieve much else.
What usually tends to happen is we get excited about this news change we’re about to make and throw ourselves into a new health and fitness routine, committing to exercising for 40 minutes every day, and eating salads and banning all snacks. Within a week many of us will have fallen of the wagon. Why? because we tried to change to much at the same times. The secret to change that sticks is to make it incremental, changing one thing at a time, embedding the habit before
moving on to the next one.
This gentle approach can work for any set of changes you’d like to introduce into your life from changing eating habits to making more time for self care or study.
