Self-care by definition is all about you. It’s not selfish to put yourself first. In fact, in some scenarios, it provides a positive advantage. Think about the many ways you endlessly prioritise your children ahead of you and forget about your own needs in the bargain. It may have become second nature to ignore your own needs, but remember: you skip on your self-care at your peril.
We all know how important your children are and that you would do anything for them. Yet all too often their needs and their place in your life far outweighs the time you allot to yourself. This chasm of difference, where your needs are way down the list, can only lead to you feeling unsettled and unfulfilled.
Not Plane Sailing
Mums naturally fall into the routine of prioritising their children above their own needs. Yet it is important you succeed in putting yourself first a bit more. A good analogy is when travelling by plane, the ‘own oxygen mask first’ scenario. If the plane you’re travelling in gets into difficulty, it’s natural to put on your children’s oxygen mask first. But in actual fact it’s much more useful for you to don the mask first, enabling you to be in the best position to look after your children. Putting yourself first once in a while has this same effect and doesn’t do any harm at all.
Who Cares? You Care!
It’s sometimes useful to identify why you don’t value and prioritise yourself enough to take good care of your own needs. Can you remember the last time you put yourself first? If your memory can’t stretch back that long ago, then it’s time you looked at the positives to be gained from a self-care session. Think about what you have sacrificed in your life as a result of always being second best. What dreams have you let go by the wayside and what things are you putting off until you have the time? Use these things that were once dear to you to spur you on to make time to do some of them now.
Self-care Is The Priority
You’ll find over time that if you’re not at your best, you won’t be as patient, resilient, positive and, most of all, happy. There could be many reasons for this, from feeling underappreciated, too fatigued or time constraints. You know from experience that when you are low, it’s all too easy for things to get on top of you, for your self-belief to wane, your confidence to fade and your energy deplete. Tell yourself that by making time for your own self-care, you’re not only doing yourself a favour, but those around you too.
