Embracing the 21/90 Rule

Knowing this 21/90 rule can help you establish new routines. By committing to a new habit for at least 21 days, you allow your brain to adapt to the new behaviour, making it more likely to stick.

We’ve often spoken about setting specific goals. Desired habits are no different. See the habit you wish to establish as a goal and track your progress daily for at least those first three weeks. You can even use your diary to support you with this, having a daily alert going off as a reminder.

After the initial 21 days, continue to monitor and maintain the habit for an additional 90 days to reinforce its permanence.

 

The Two-Minute Rule

The two-minute rule suggests that if a new habit takes less than two minutes to complete, you should start by focusing on consistency rather than duration or intensity. This approach helps establish the habit's foundation, which can then be built upon over time.

For mums and mumpreneurs, this can be especially useful as finding two minutes for something feels much more achievable and manageable. You can apply the two-minute rule to any type of habit you wish to establish, for example, decluttering, exercising, or journaling. Begin by dedicating just two minutes a day to the activity, and once the habit is established, gradually increase the duration or intensity.

Visual reminders serve as powerful cues to reinforce new habits. These prompts can take various forms, such as sticky notes, vision boards, or photos, and can be placed strategically throughout your home or workspace.

Mums and mumpreneurs can create visual reminders for habits like meal planning, family time, or self-care. Place these cues in prominent locations to help keep your goals top of mind and provide motivation to maintain your new habits.

 

Tracking and Celebrating Progress

Tracking your progress and celebrating milestones can provide motivation and reinforcement for new habits. By acknowledging your successes, you create positive associations with the habit, making it more enjoyable and sustainable.

You can use various tracking methods, such as habit trackers, journals, or mobile apps, to monitor their progress. Celebrate milestones with rewards that align with your goals, such as a spa day for maintaining a self-care routine or a family outing for consistently dedicating time to loved ones.

 

With determination and perseverance, new habits can be built. Incorporate these techniques into your daily routine and watch as your healthy habits flourish.
