On March 8^th 2011, women throughout the world will be celebrating International Women’s Day. This year sees the centenary of the global day, which celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

The last century has seen women throughout the world dedicated to making significant changes to improve the lives of women. These dedicated women have fought for momentous and groundbreaking changes that provide many women throughout the world with the rights they have today.

As far back as 1910, Copenhagen was hosting the second International Conference Of Working Women. The leader of the Women’s Office for the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Clara Zetkin, nominated the concept of an International Women’s Day. With over 100 women from 17 countries attending the conference, the proposal was greeted with unanimous approval.

In many countries, including China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women’s Day is celebrated a national holiday. Without the work of these iconic women and many more, women would struggle to find a place in working society, let alone have the ability to juggle family and work life as successfully as we do in 2011.

International Women’s Day inspires women to continue to campaign for women’s rights throughout the world so we can live in an equal and successful society.

On 8^th March, thousands of events are being held to inspire women, remember past efforts and celebrate achievements. The aim of the day is to bring women together “to ensure the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.”
