Knowledge is of no use unless it’s implemented. Once you understand who you are, it’s time to start celebrating your unique and authentic self. The best way to do this is by living as that person rather than the character you were trying to be. Here are 3 ways on which you can start doing that.
1. Check In With Your Values
Recognising your values are an important step to discovering more about the person you really are. But it doesn’t stop there. Once you know what’s truly important to you, decisions become much easier.
Whenever you’re unsure what to do, check your options against your values. You will nearly always find that one of your choices is more aligned with your values. By checking in with your values first, you can be sure that you are always acting in accordance with your true identity and celebrating the real you rather than living by someone else’s expectations.
2. More Of What You Love, Less Of What You Don’t
As we move through life and have an increasing amount of expectations placed upon us – family, partner, work colleagues, friends – we can find that our lives contain less of what we love and would bring us joy and more of what we think we “should” be doing and enjoying.
If you want to celebrate the real you, it’s time to change that. Make a conscious effort to do those things that light you up and bring you joy. Aim to make them a part of your everyday life.
At the same time, start reducing the things that aren’t aligned with the real you. It can be tough to start saying no and to stop doing something that has become expected of you but anyone who really cares about you will support you in increasing the joy you feel.
3. Be Ready For Your Inner Voice
Human beings are designed to resist change and you can guarantee that as soon as you start making changes, your inner voice is going to pop up. You know the one, she tends to mutter mean things to you such as:
Who are you to deserve so much happiness in life?
You should just fit in…
You’re nothing special, stop expecting so much…
You’re letting other people down…
Celebrating your unique self shouldn’t be open to criticism but you can guarantee she will appear. But knowing this, you can be ready.
Replace any negative thoughts you have with celebrations of the things you’ve done great – start noting down all those little achievements, so you have a list to hand when needed.
With practice, you will be able to switch that negative voice into one that starts celebrating you too.
