In the last blog post, we looked at how you could reflect on the last year. If you haven’t followed the step-by-step guide in that, then I would suggest you do that first before reading this blog post. The reason why reflection is so important is because it helps guide you in setting your goals for the following year.
You may have been surprised by some of the scores you gave to areas of your life. Without doing that work, you may not have recognised the areas which need more attention and focus to get you closer to your ideal next year. Take a moment now to review those scores and decide on which will be your priority over the coming twelve months – what do you want to achieve next year?
Successful Goal Setting
To help you focus your energy on the right things next year, you need to set goals. Goal setting can be harder than it seems – you’re often left feeling like you’re plucking things from the air. The key is to be realistic about what is achievable and still ensure that they are motivating. This means making sure that they are important to you.
Look at what your top priorities are for your business and/or your day-to-day life – use the reflection work to help you. Set a goal for each of those areas of priority. Make sure it is clear, specific and that you can measure your success along the way.
For example, you might decide you want to improve your health and fitness. However, this isn’t clear or specific and we don’t know how you’d be measuring it. On the other hand, if you were to set a goal of losing 5lb a month, you would be able to regularly measure your progress and keep yourself motivated. If you’re a mumpreneur, the same applies in business. Say you want to increase your profit margin by 10% across the year, break it down into months and track it.
It’s important to break down your goal for the year into these smaller chunks, whether it’s weekly, monthly or quarterly as it will help you to stay on track as it allows you to make timely adjustments rather than suddenly realising towards the end of the year that you’re a long way from your target.
Your goals should also be realistic, but not too easy. Look back at what you achieved last year – what would push you slightly without overstretching you?
How To Enhance Your Chances Of Success
When your busy doing all the things that come with being a mum or mumpreneur, goals can get forgotten and pushed to the back of the mind. You look up at the end of the year and wonder what happened.
To avoid this, make your goals visible. Write them down in list form or create a vision board. Then, pin it up where you can see it regularly - the bathroom, above your desk, the fridge, next to the kettle – and then it serves as a constant reminder keeping you focused throughout the year.
Finally believe in yourself. Believe in everything you do, and you will knock it out of the park. Watch out 2020, you got this!
