It's not the goal you set that matters, but what you do with it! In our last blog post, we discussed how just setting goals was not enough. To achieve them, you need to do some planning. But that's not the only way you can increase your chances of achieving your goals. Today, we're discussing three other things you can do to bring those goals within your reach during 2022.
1. Fear-Setting from Tim Ferriss
The first of these comes from Tim Ferriss, entrepreneur and author of the famous 4-Hour Workweek book. When talking about goals, he instead uses the term ‘fear-setting’. More than anything else, it is our fears that are likely to hold us back. Rather than allowing this to happen and to affect whether he achieves his goals or not, Ferriss prefers to confront those fears. When you’re ‘fear-setting’, you define the fears that you think might hold you back from achieving your goal and consider the worst thing that could happen. From there, you plan how you would handle this so that you are prepared. Finally, you plan how you could prevent these things from occurring. That way, the fears will no longer hold you back.
2. Get Curious
Getting curious is a great skill to develop and not just when it comes to achieving your goals. One of the best ways to get curious is to simply ask yourself ‘why’. For example, if you’re procrastinating about taking the next step towards your goal, ask yourself why this might be. Hint – there's often a fear hiding in there! Once you know why you can overcome it.
You can also get curious when something goes really well or when things are going wrong. Again, just ask yourself ‘why’. Why did this succeed so easily? Why is this not working out? From there, you can make any necessary adjustments and get yourself back on track.
3. Commit To Your Goal
Finally, it’s important to commit to your goal. Setting it and then forgetting about it, or just telling yourself about it now and again, won’t work particularly well. Writing it down is an excellent place to start as studies have shown that this simple action increases your chances of achieving it by 42% - not bad!
But there are other things you can do too. For example, you may want to share your goal with an accountability partner. If you agree to regularly check in with each other and how you’re progressing towards your goals, even better.
Alternatively, you might consider whether you’re motivated by the ‘carrot or stick’. If you’re a ‘carrot’ person, set yourself rewards for taking steps towards your goal. If you’re a ‘stick’ person, set yourself a negative consequence for not taking action. If you choose this method, it mustn't be related to the achievement of the goal, but to the action you take. Why? Because it’s not about hitting those goals but moving towards them!
Whatever methods you use, don’t lose sight of the importance of remaining flexible. The steps you take towards goals might change; the end goal might even alter too. But knowing where you want to go and taking steps towards that will always move you closer to the life you really want.
