Finding The Balance In Your Hectic Lifestyle
Jul 23, 2012

So many mums come to me and say, “There aren’t enough hours in the day!” It can be so difficult juggling work commitments and family life but it can be done simply by valuing your time and using it wisely!

Realise you cannot do everything at once and acknowledge that there are areas that may waste your time! Addressing these two issues will free up time you had lost so you can spend it in a way that works for you.

Every day mums face a different set of challenges and our minds get cluttered with everything we have to consider. Try to break your day down into set hours in which you allocate key tasks. For mums who work from home and have kids in school, your routine could look something like this:

7am–9am Family gets up, has breakfast, gets ready for work/school, school run
9am–9.30am Time to recover from the morning rush – clear away the breakfast things and get organised for the day ahead
9.30am–12pm Work time. Before you open your emails, work on any tasks you know are outstanding and require your attention to meet deadlines.
12pm–1pm Lunch. Make sure you break for lunch as it’s an opportunity to refresh and re-energise yourself for the afternoon, else you will only become ineffective at what you’re doing, which long term may lead to burning yourself out.
1pm–2.30pm Work. Finish any tasks you were working on. Catch up on e-mails and any calls that need making or returning.
2.30pm–4pm Use this time to prepare for the kids arriving home and to pick them up from school. Allocate enough time so you can do this without stress and have time to spend catching up on their day and helping out with any guidance needed for homework.
4pm–8pm You have a slot here for quality family time. This will include dinner, kids’ clubs/lessons and bedtime. Try to settle things down by 6.30pm so the kids know they need to begin wind down for the evening and their bedtime routine.
8pm–10pm This is your time: pop out to the gym, catch up with friends or spend quality time with your partner. You may have to use some of this time to catch up on household chores or work project deadlines, but ensure you only do this a few times a week. It is important to take time out to focus on you and to recharge your batteries before the next day begins!

In this example, working on a five-day week, you will spend 20 hours working and at least 16 hours quality time with your children. You are then free to work out how to spend your weekends. You may need some time to catch up on work, shopping or household chores but counteract this by spending the same amount of time as a family. Once you have set your hours, turn your mind to the task. That way you will be able to invest your whole self in what you are doing and get the greatest balance in your life.

I hope this guide can go some way to help you create your own routine. Try not to give yourself a hard time if you end up working more hours than spending time with the kids and vice versa. Some weeks may be more work focused and others more family focused, hence your reason for going in to business to enable that flexibility to work around your family needs and commitments. The point here is to help you focus on what you’re doing – being in the moment and enjoying everything you set your mind to.
