Finding It Hard To Declutter? Here’s How You Can Let Go!
Feb 24, 2020

Decluttering can be surprisingly difficult. You look at the pile of stuff you have and you know that you need to reduce it. However, when you’re working through the items you can find yourself feeling sentimental and wanting to hold on to everything. A classic phrase that is often used is “it might come in handy in the future”. If you’re having trouble in letting go, here are our top tips to help you move forward and create space for your future.

What Do I Want To Keep?

Changing the question from what you will get rid of to what you will keep, can help you to get perspective. By focusing on what you would like to keep, you begin to recognise the things that are most important to you. You will find that you select a few things rather than everything!

Does It Spark Joy?

This is another Marie Kondo method which asks you to think about how the object makes you feel. If you’ve been holding onto a pair of jeans “one size too small” for the last five years in the hope you would lose some weight, you may find that rather than sparking joy, it actually brings you down, reminding you of what you’ve not achieved.

When you recognise that something isn’t bringing you joy, it becomes much easier to let it go.

Who Might Need It More?

Many of us have become accustomed to having things around us. It’s quite probable that we don’t need most of them. By asking yourself, “who might need it more?”, you instead focus on how it could benefit someone else if you donated it. Recognising how much more valuable it could be to someone else will help you to see that it’s not really adding much to your life.

Is It Really Special?

The definition of special is, “better, greater, or otherwise different from what is usual.” That means not everything can be considered special. If you’re struggling to let go of things and reduce your belongings, ask yourself if it’s special. You could also gather items together, for example your coats or mugs, and ask yourself which one is special.

Again, this gets you focusing on those that do mean more to you and allows you to distinguish them from the rest of your belongings that you could let go.

Decluttering is not easy. However, when you create space in your life, you allow room for good things to flow to you. If you want to create a better future, it’s time to let go of some of the past.
