Christmas Savings To Savour
Nov 08, 2010

In this month’s Empower, we discussed the benefit of having a strict budget that would enable you to enjoy Christmas 2010 without worrying about overspending. In addition to budgeting, we’d like to share some more great ideas about how to survive Christmas without breaking the bank.

Homemade Decorations And Gifts
Christmas should be all about enjoying quality family time. A great way to do this during the run up to Christmas is to make and share lots of festive crafts. Simply collect pine cones, acorns and such like, spray them silver and gold, and hey presto you have some beautiful and original decorations, to adorn your home or give as unique gifts for loved ones.

Charity Bargains
If money is tight this year, visit your local charity shops and hunt out some great bargains. Charity shops often have a good supply of toys and puzzles that are in fantastic condition: why miss a bargain because it’s second hand? You could also find a great antique-type gift while you’re there. Many mums hold ‘Nearly New’ sales at this time of year. This is a great opportunity to find good quality toys and baby equipment that would make great gifts for your little ones. These types of sales are normally advertised locally, or you could search online (try http://www.nct.org.uk/in-your-area/nearly-new-sales or http://www.netmums.com/boards/nearlynew/) to find out what is available in your area.

Say Cheese!
A great gift for the grandparents is a framed picture of your children. There is often little need to visit a professional photographer to create this gift. Simply take a number of snaps of your children playing near the Christmas tree or wrapped up warm on a crisp day. Your family will probably appreciate this far more than something chosen at random from a catalogue!

Online Comparisons
If you have a particular gift in mind, search for it on a price comparison website such as Kelkoo or Pricerunner. You will find that products sold online are often much cheaper than on the high street. Get surfing and see what bargains you could snap up!

The Early Bird…
Try to get ahead this year by writing your Christmas cards as early as possible. That way you will save a bundle when it comes to posting them off to your friends and family by using 2nd class stamps. You will find this a great saver this and every year to come!

We hope these tips will help you save some money this year. Why not share them with your friends and family so they too can share in the joy of saving at Christmas time? Whichever cost savings you manage this year, celebrate your success and revel in your frugal but fun festivities!
