Best Laid Plans
Jul 20, 2015

When you choose to have children, there is a real sense of the unknown. How will you cope? What will they be like? Will they sleep? Although these questions change as our children grow, they still have the ability to baffle us, overwhelm us and inspire us. So of course, when you have created a summer holiday routine using spreadsheets, diaries, calendars and white boards to stay on track with your business, it is typical that the children will inevitably do something to wreak havoc with your best laid plans. So what’s Plan B?

Plan B is essential to good business planning, especially during the school holidays. It is always good to have a contingency and multiple back up plans to ensure your business can still operate even if you can’t manage it. Your Plan B doesn’t have to include all business contingencies; often it’s the household chores that get less attention during the holidays, so by all means include these on your list but remember some chores are not necessarily essential!

Marketing Most mumpreneurs market their business via social media. There are many scheduling tools you can use to manage your posts more effectively. One of the most brilliant advantages of these tools is that you can post in advance and choose when comments are published. If you can be super organised, all your social media activity can be scheduled before the holidays even begin!

Finances If you haven’t already got one, a book keeper or accounts manager can be vital in keeping the cash flow moving if you’re away on holiday or needing to take a few days out of the business. Look for someone who can get to grips with your business quickly and is able to work flexibly to suit your needs.

Management Asking for help is always difficult for mumpreneurs. It isn’t that you fear being turned down but more to do with trusting a person with your business. How will you know the work will be done to the right standards without you having to micro manage everything? If your business requires people to help it grow, you’re going to have to get over trust issues sooner or later. Why not trial delegating tasks during the holidays so you get used to managing people on a temporary basis before arranging anything more permanent?

Outsource If you want to avoid employment issues altogether, outsourcing work is the best way to go. You simply employ someone else to do some of your everyday tasks. As you’re paying for the service, you can usually check out the quality and standard of work offered to ensure your expectations are set accordingly.

Home Help There are many people locally who can help you with household chores during the summer. Cleaners, ironers and gardeners are all available to free up your time for more important tasks. You can use these people on a temporary or permanent basis, depending on your exact requirements.
