Battling Overwhelm: Strategies For Finding Peace In Chaos!
Feb 27, 2023

When you’re feeling completely overwhelmed, the last thing you want to hear are strategies which can help avoid these feelings. It’s too late for that. What you want is advice on what to do now or in that moment. It's important to remember that it's okay to feel overwhelmed and that there are steps you can take to help manage those feelings. In this blog we share some of the things you can do to reduce overwhelm and return to a sense of peace and calm.

1. Step Back

Sometimes, overwhelm hits us in a moment rather than it being something we feel continuously. When this happens it’s good to take a step back and assess the situation. Ask yourself what is causing you to feel overwhelmed and try to identify any specific triggers. Once you've identified the cause, you can start to develop a plan to address it.

2. Take A Break

Sometimes overwhelm is telling you that you need to take a break! While mums and mumpreneurs might resist the idea of taking a break because there’s already not enough hours in the day, little if anything, is achieved when we’re overwhelmed especially when we try and push through exacerbating our feeling of overwhelm further. Instead, step away for a little while. Take a walk, read a book, or just sit and breathe. Give yourself a chance to clear your mind, recharge and refocus.

3. Practice Mindfulness

This is one way in which you can take a break! Alternatively, you can make this a regular practise to continue reducing overwhelm. It’s also a great way to reduce stress and anxiety. Simply, find a quiet spot and focus on your breath for a few minutes, following it in and out. This can help you feel present and can be very calming.

4. Talk To Someone

Don't keep your feelings bottled up as they tend to snowball out of control and can feel bigger than they actually are as a result. Sometimes all we need to feel better is to let out our feelings to enable us to better understand and process them. Reach out to a friend or family member for support. Talking about what's going on can help you feel less alone and more in control.

5. Take A Power Nap

Sometimes we’re just too tired to think straight and that can easily lead to us feeling overwhelmed. If you can, try taking a short nap. It can refresh your energy and give you a new perspective on the tasks you are trying to complete. Sometimes, even just one minute sat quietly, doing nothing, can be enough to reset your mind and regain focus.

6. Break Down The Task

Overwhelm often strikes when we’re tackling a particularly tricky or large task. If this is the case, break it down into smaller, more bite-sized chunks. This can make it feel more manageable and less daunting. You can even take a mini break in between each chunk to restore your peace and allow you to achieve more.

7. Reach Out For Professional Help

Sometimes, you might need help from someone outside of your family and friends. Discussing your feelings with a stranger is beneficial for many with instant relief often reported. Working with a professional also means you can discuss your individual situation in a non-judgemental safe environment and receive bespoke advice and strategies tailored to your specific needs. This could be from a counsellor, therapist, coach, or doctor.
