Banish Burnout For Good
May 11, 2015

We’ve all been there. You’re doing too much, things are getting on top of you, there’s no end in sight and your life seems to be an endless merry-go-round of activities, car journeys, meals and sleep. Where will it all end? You’re burning up your energy, your emotional reserves and not allowing yourself some respite to recharge your batteries. Here are some thoughts on buffering against a burnout.

Know Your Limits
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of burnout is actually acknowledging that you may be approaching that situation in your own mind. If you think you may be burning out, then the chances are, you are. A good way to avoid becoming exhausted is to prioritise sensibly. Make sure you’re not trying to cram too much into your day.  Try to be realistic and to ensure you get everything you need to do, done. But equally, don’t waste time on things that can be done another day or even put off until you can allot them the time and attention they are due. To avoid becoming too busy, learn to say no to certain things, just to please other people.

Keep A Clear Head
Don’t get run down. As a busy mum it’s easy to forget your own needs, as you’re always focusing on your family first. Try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as this will give you a healthy mind. Conserve energy whenever you can and don’t get overrun. Being able to think clearly and sensibly will help you keep on top of things and make the right decisions. A muddled mind can sometimes lead to wrong or rash choices, so keep a clear head.

If you can, share your responsibility with your partner or wider family and don’t allow yourself be left to do everything on your own. Raising a family should be a team effort and it shouldn’t all be down to you. Make the most of the support you have around you. A problem shared is a problem halved and if you think you are approaching burnout, talk to other people around you about it in good time.

Keep Calm And Carry On
Stay calm and at peace with yourself: recognise that you sometimes need to keep calm and step back from the daily grind. It’s not selfish to recognise this and it’s important that you are honest with yourself. Eat well, stay healthy, don’t get stuck in a rut and mix things up in your daily routine. Don’t get overrun and you’ll be able to keep busy without the burnout.
