An Introduction To Forest Bathing!
Apr 24, 2023

Ever felt like you just want to step off the treadmill for a minute? For the world to stop spinning and give you time to take a breath? The life of a mum or mumpreneur is busy. But that doesn’t mean every minute needs to be so. In fact, taking a few minutes to step out of the fast-paced world, to relax and recharge, can do you the world of good, leaving you feeling refreshed and revived. Forest bathing allows you to do exactly that. It’s a natural way to reduce stress and improve your well-being. But what is it? And how do you do it? Welcome to your introduction to forest bathing.

What is forest bathing?

Shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing as it’s known in the UK, originated in Japan. It is the practice of immersing yourself in nature for its therapeutic benefits. It involves spending time in a forest or other natural environment, taking in the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations of the natural world. Think of it as stillness and mindfulness in the woods! Nature has a calming and restorative effect on our minds and bodies, and forest bathing aims to take full advantage of this.

How to do forest bathing

Forest bathing is not about hiking, jogging or even exercising. It's about slowing down and becoming immersed in the natural environment around you. To have a go at forest bathing, all you need to do is follow these steps:

1. Find a forest or natural area near you. Look for a park, woodland or forest area where you can go to be surrounded by nature. Even a small patch of green space can work if it's peaceful.

2. Leave your phone and distractions behind. This is a time to disconnect from technology and connect with nature. Turn off your phone, leave your smartwatch at home, and focus on being present in the moment.

3. Find a quiet spot and sit down. Look for a spot where you can sit comfortably for a while. It could be a bench, a rock, or even the ground. We like leaning against a tree. Take a few deep breaths and relax.

4. Use your senses. Tune in to the sounds, smells, and sensations around you. What do you hear? The rustle of leaves? Birdsong? What do you smell? The scent of flowers or trees? What can you feel? The sun on your face or the cool breeze?

5. If you would like to move through the forest, do so slowly and mindfully. Notice the details of your surroundings, such as the patterns in the bark of a tree or the way the light filters through the leaves.

6. Connect with nature. Try to form a connection with the natural world around you. You could focus on a particular tree, plant, or animal and study it. Or you could simply open yourself up to the wonder and beauty of the natural world.

7. Take your time. Forest bathing is not a rushed activity. Spend as long as you like in the forest. You may find that you lose track of time altogether.

Overcoming obstacles...

If your mind is usually busy with thoughts constantly racing through, you may find it difficult to relax and switch off at first. This is perfectly normal. It doesn’t mean forest bathing isn’t for you. In fact, you’re more likely to benefit from it! Take it easy on yourself and keep trying. Every time you notice your thoughts have wondered, return them to your natural surroundings. It will become easier with time.

One common challenge that mums may face when trying to practise forest bathing is that they may not have the luxury of time alone. With young children to care for, finding time for yourself can be difficult. However, there is a way to incorporate forest bathing into your family time and even get your kids involved.

Encourage your children to join you on your forest bathing walks. Children often have a natural affinity for nature, and spending time outside can be an enriching experience for them as well. You could make a game of spotting different plants and animals, or encourage them to use their senses to explore their surroundings. By getting your kids involved in forest bathing, you can help them cultivate a love and appreciation for the natural world, while also reaping the benefits of the practice yourself.

If your children are still too young to walk or sit for extended periods, consider using a baby carrier or stroller to bring them along. You could also try incorporating forest bathing into your regular family outings, such as picnics or visits to the park. By making nature a regular part of your family's routine, you can help promote health and well-being for everyone.

So why not try it? Let us know in the comments where you will be forest bathing.
