Simplicity is harder than it sounds, right? While we've been talking about keeping things simple this month, it might not feel like it's something that's simple to do. Yes, it takes some effort but in the long run, gives you the breathing space you need as well reducing stress and anxiety that you may feel. That's why this blog post is going to run through five ways you can keep your goals simple. Even better, the same advice applies to other areas of life too.
1. Next Step Only
It can be easy to focus just on the bigger goal that you want to achieve in the long run. But if you want to reduce the pressure and stress that you're under, take it one step at a time. Focus on the small step you need to take next and stick with that until you achieve it, and then you can move onto the next one. Small incremental progress is better than procrastinating with overwhelm staying stuck making no progress towards a bigger goal.
2. One At A Time
Ever found yourself with about seven different things you would like to achieve? You start full of enthusiasm, and a few days later, the overwhelm settle in. When the inevitable happens, and you're unable to keep them all going, you then criticise yourself for not doing better.
Keep intentions simple by only focusing on one at a time. There are a variety of ways that you might do this. For example:
How exactly you do this will depend on the goal you've set but make sure you're only dealing with one goal at a time and you know when that is! You’ll find yourself taking action and making progress so much more effectively and efficiently as a result.
3. Keep It Realistic
We all have big goals and plans that we want to go after. However, especially in the current climate, we can end up becoming despondent and disheartened unless we break them down into smaller steps. When setting your goals, yes allow a little stretch it’s how we grow and develop, but also keeping them realistic can really help you to simplify things and keep the pressure level down.
4. Give Yourself Permission
Ever set yourself a goal and quickly regretted it? Life is too short to be spending your time doing things that are making you miserable and stressed out. Often, we commit to something and then don't want to let go of it, even if it's not what we hoped, because we tell ourselves that we'll be a failure if we don't.
If this is you, it's time to give yourself permission to change your mind. If you try something and it's not for you, that's fine. You're one step further forward in discovering what is right for you – see it as a success rather than a failure when you act to be living your best life.
5. Stop The Comparisons
One of the easiest ways to start overcomplicating goals and adding more pressure is by comparing yourself to others. You are not on their journey – your life has taken a different course, and following others is a sure way to end up somewhere you didn't want to be.
Keep things simple by focusing on what YOU want and what YOUR next step should be to achieve that. Avoid taking on goals that are more someone else’s expectation of you, even when achieved these rarely bring you real fulfilment or happiness.
