5 Ways To Declutter The Mind!
Mar 28, 2022

How long has it been since your mind felt serene? If it’s been a while, then this blog post is for you. We're used to decluttering physical spaces, but we don't often talk about this in terms of our brains. But decluttering your mind will help you achieve more and improve your mental wellbeing. Here are five tips on how you can do precisely that.

1. Write Things Down

We can spend all day distracted from what we're supposed to be focusing on because so many other things pop into our heads. This clutter slows our brains. Rather than trying to hold everything in your memory, write it all down. Start with a big brain dump before getting in the habit of noting things down as they come up. You'll be amazed at the amount of space it frees up and the calmer feelings it creates.

2. Separate What’s Within Your Control And What’s Not

This one is great for all the things you might be worried about. There is little point in wasting time and energy on the things that are beyond your control – you can only deal with them if or when they happen. Write down your list of worries and sort them into things that you can and can’t control. Accept the things you can't do anything about and let them drop from your mind. Make a plan of how to handle things in your control, so these aren't cluttering your thoughts too.

3. Limit Your Exposure

This is a big one for the current day. We are exposed to a vast amount of information each day, more than our brains can process. This is especially true when we're scrolling online or through social media. Another culprit is the newsreel. With twenty-four-hour channels, we can get hooked into doom and gloom, which can really bring our mood down. If you limit the amount of information and bad news you expose yourself to, then you create some space in your mind.

4. Reduce Decisions

Making decisions uses up quite a bit of brain power, and we only have a limited amount to use each day. Think about the typical morning. You get up and have to decide what to wear, what to have for breakfast, what to put in the children's lunchboxes, what you're going to have for dinner tonight and whether you need to get something out of the freezer, what will be the best route to take to avoid traffic, and so on. It is no wonder you can feel exhausted before the day even gets going.

It is the reason some high-fliers have multiple sets of the same work outfit – they never have to choose what to wear each morning. This might be a radical approach, but if you can reduce your decisions, you can be more productive. A weekly meal plan can be a helpful way to start this.

5. Stop Multi-tasking

It has become almost a thing of legend – women are better at multi-tasking. But actually, it’s men that have got the right approach. We multi-task because that’s what society has told us we should do. But we’re actually doing ourselves a disservice. Our minds can't multi-task – they just jump back and forth between the different priorities, which can be exhausting. Dealing with one thing at a time will allow your brain to operate at a more optimal level and save you time in the long run!
