5 Signs You Are Seriously Overwhelmed (Even If You Don’t Recognise It)!
Jul 11, 2022

Have you ever felt ‘off’ somehow? Perhaps you’ve woken up in the morning and found sleep has not refreshed you? While most mums and mumpreneurs will experience overwhelm in their life, many do not recognise it until it becomes a serious problem and affects their health. That’s because we don’t always recognise the symptoms. We put them down as ‘life as a mum’ or just one of those things. In our next blog post we’ll be looking at how you can overcome overwhelm, and this is much easier to do if you recognise it early. That’s why we’re sharing five signs that you might be seriously overwhelmed.

1. Trouble Sleeping

Mums and mumpreneurs are well used to their sleep being disturbed when their children are young. But sometimes, you can find that your sleep pattern goes haywire even when little ones are sleeping through the night. When you’re overwhelmed, you might find that you have trouble going to sleep, staying asleep, or even sleeping too long. You can also wake up still feeling exhausted.

2. Lack Of Energy

Overwhelm can also cause a lack of energy. You might feel as though you don’t want to do much. It becomes a battle to drag yourself through the basic tasks each day. This lack of energy can even spill over into the hobbies or events which you would usually enjoy.

3. Being Inefficient

Have you ever set out to do something and a few hours later, realised you’ve barely got anything done? Overwhelm not only causes a lack of energy but can also lead to you being inefficient when you do attempt tasks. Part of the reason for this is that overwhelm can cause difficulties in maintaining focus and attention. It can feel like you’re pedalling on a bike as fast as you can, but you’re not actually getting anywhere.

4. Overreactions

We’ve all burst into tears for little reason at some point in our lives. While swings in hormones can be one cause of this, so can overwhelm. In fact, you can end up overreacting to all kinds of situations with negative emotions, such as sadness, anger, or frustration, rising quickly. This may lead to arguments with your partner or snapping at your children.

5. Under Or Overeating

For some people, overwhelm can lead to them constantly feeling nauseous. As a result, their appetite reduces, and they start under-eating. Others have the opposite problem and overeat when they’re overwhelmed. They’re often not conscious of this.

Are You Overwhelmed?

If any of these signs ring true for you, take a moment to stop and consider whether you could be overwhelmed. Many of us will tell ourselves things like ‘it’s just life’ or ‘I need to suck it up and get on with it’. But ignoring signs of overwhelm and not addressing the issues will only perpetuate problems. Spot them early and they’ll be much easier to solve. More on that in the next blog post!
