"Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.”
Most people will have heard this quote at some point. What you believe can determine your success levels. But what do you do if you realise you don’t have much belief or faith in your abilities to achieve the goals you’ve set out for 2022? Do you just give up? Of course not. But you will need to develop your self-belief if you want to achieve them. That’s why in this blog post, we’re sharing with you, three ways in which your can develop faith and belief in yourself.
1. Interrupt Negative Self-Talk
We all have a Negative Nelly inside us – that inner critical voice that tells us unkind things such as, “Ugh, you look terrible, no one will look at you twice,” and “you’re so stupid, why would anyone listen to you?”. Sometimes, we are aware of this, and other times it just runs in the background of our minds, unchecked.
But to build your self-talk, you need to have words with Negative Nelly because she also has the capability to be Nourishing Nelly – the inner voice who tells you just how fabulous you are, darling! But after years of being in her negative persona, it does require a little work to turn her around. Start to become aware of that inner voice and what she’s saying, and argue back. Replace her words with more positive phrases.
2. Accept Compliments
How often have you batted away a compliment that someone has given you? Perhaps they said something along the lines of, “that dress looks fabulous on you!”, and you replied, “What? This old thing?”. It seems that the British, in particular, are terrible at accepting and taking on board compliments. In fact, for some, they make them feel very uncomfortable. It’s not hard to see why – you believe one thing about yourself, and someone else comes along and has the audacity to contradict your belief with their own positive one about you!
Being able to accept compliments and take them on board takes time. But the first step is really easy. Simply reply with “thank you,” whether you believe them or not!
3. Set Small Goals
This one takes us back to last month’s topic of goal setting and shows us another benefit of breaking a big goal up into smaller steps. With small goals along the way which you can achieve, you get a sense of achievement. It gives you a boost in your confidence and your self-belief as you can’t deny that you’re making progress.
We would also highly recommend celebrating these small goals that you achieve. This will reinforce the success that you have, drawing your attention to it. These small goals start to tell you that you can do this. Reaching your ultimate goal is just a series of other small steps like the ones you’ve already taken. Keep going, and you will get there.
How To Get Started
As with anything, getting started is hard but continuing your progress is even harder. That’s why we would suggest starting with just one of these tips. Put it into practise and continue using it until it becomes second nature. Once you’ve reached that point, you can introduce another.
However, if you feel like you need additional help building your self-belief, do get in touch to discover how I can help you with the process.
