While showing gratitude now and again might give you a quick boost in mood, it will only be temporary unless you make it a daily habit. It’s also one of those things that can be much easier to do when you’re on a high and having a great day. However, it’s on the more difficult days that it’s really needed. Today, we’re covering three different ways that you can practise gratitude and make it a part of your routine.
1. Keep A Gratitude Diary Or Journal
If you're someone who likes to write down your thoughts, then a gratitude diary or journal could be the right move for you. You don't need anything fancy, just a notebook and a pen. Some people keep them by the side of the bed and make a habit of writing 3-5 things they are thankful for first thing in the morning or when they turn in at night. Others like to do it with their morning cup of coffee. It doesn’t matter when in the day that you do it, just that it becomes a daily activity. It can also be fun to come up with different things each day!
2. Thanking Others
I’m sure you know how good it makes you feel when someone says, “thank you”. But being the one offering that thanks and knowing how good that makes them feel can impact how you feel too. There are so many small acts going on around us each day that we usually just expect or take for granted. Rather than just throwing an offhand “thanks” to someone while barely even noticing them, try pausing a moment to really express your gratitude to them. Commit to doing this daily will really help you to create a positive mindset.
3. A Family Affair
As more people recognise the benefits of counting their blessings, they're starting to make it a family event. The best time to do this can be at dinner time. You can sit down at the table together, and in turn, each member of the family shares the three things they are grateful for that day. This way, you're not only lifting your own mood but also that of your entire family. It's also quality time together. There are, of course, many other ways that you can build gratitude into your daily life, but these suggestions will allow you to start.
